Lecture 10Charles Dickens (1812-1870)---the greatest representative of English critical realism Life and Career 1812，born at Portsmouth. At 12 (most miserable life ), his father was put into Prison for debt . He had to give up schooling to work in an shoe-blacking factory. At 15, entered a laweyers office, two years later he became a Parliamentary reporter for newspapers. In 1833, began the career as a writer. In 1870, he died of overwork and was buried in the Poets Corner at Westminster Abbey.  ---- His novels offer a most complete and realistic picture of English society of his age ---- His works expose and criticize all the property, injustice, hypocrisy and corruptness he sees all around him.  ---- His novels cover a wide range: social, moral, emotional, and psychological. But his social attitudes are very complicated: either optimistic or pessimistic but shows no fundamental solution .
