美国社会与文化 Chapter 13 Geography 1The full name of the United States is the United States of America. The U.S. has a land area of 9.3 million square kilometers.  2.It is the fourth largest country in the world in size after Russia, Canada and China. The U.S. is a federal republic with many states.  3.The Mississippi has been called “father of waters” or “old man river”.  4.The most important lakes in the United States are the Great Lakes. They are Lake Superior, which is the largest fresh water lake in the world    5.Traditionally from the east to west the United States can be divided into seven geographical regions. They are New England, the Middle Atlantic states, the Midwest ,the South, the Great Plains,Rockies and Intermountain region or the American West, the Pacific Coast and the New states. (新英格兰、大西洋中部各州、中西部、南部、大平原、落基山和山内地区(又称西部)以及太平洋沿岸和新加入的州 )    6.New England is made up of six states of the North –East.  mountainous or hilly, and the soil is generally thin and rocky  New England is sometimes called the birthplace of America.  7.New England is also well-known for its position in education.
