Most people, men or women, young or old, from all different parts of the world, enjoy playing or watching sports. In this section, pictures of six popular sports are presented to students. They are expected to fully participate in a discussion to find out why sports are so popular throughout the world. They are also encouraged to tell each other about their favourite sports. Students will practise their spoken English and share their opinions with each other. Brainstorming 1 Begin the lesson by asking students the following questions: Do you like sports? What sports do you know? What sports can you play? (Ball games: volleyball, basketball, football, table tennis, golf, badminton, baseball, rugby, ice hockey, etc. Track and field: long jump, high jump, pole vault, diSCUS, shot-put, relay race, hurdles, etc. Gymnastics: Mens events-rings, horizontal bar, parallel bars, vault, pommel horse, floor exercise, etc. Womens events-balance beam, uneven bars, vault, floor exercise, etc.) Write the names of different sports events on the blackboard. Draw a sketch of the sports beside the words that students are not familiar with. Who is your favourite athelete? If time permits, ask students to make a poster of their favourite athelete and present the poster in class. Why do you admire this athelete? (He/She brings joy to my life. He/She is always challenging the limits of humanity.) Do you like playing sports? How much time do you usually spend exercising or doing sports every week?
