How Plants Impact Our Lives – The Economic Value and Conservation of Plants The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is a global resource for plant and fungal knowledge. Kew has one of the largest and most diverse collections of plant and fungal specimens (living and preserved) in the world. Our unique combination of extensive collections, databases, scientific expertise and global partnerships gives Kew a leading role in facilitating access to fundamental plant and fungal information. The core purpose of Kew’s science stems from a simple but often overlooked truth: all our lives depend on plants. Located in two exquisite gardens in London, Kew stands at the centre of a global network of 800 scientific and conservation organizations - large and small - in over 100 countries. Kew has a long history of working in China and other countries in the region, where it has extensive research partnerships in areas such as traditional medicine, plant conservation, and research into useful plants and habitat restoration. Its experts provide botanical support, data and resources to the regions best universities, specialist institutes, agricultural plant breeders and commercial research departments. They also work with communities around the world who rely on wild plants for food, fuel and medicine, as well as local, national and international conservation groups. Kews main partner in China is the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Kunming Institute of Botany. In Shanghai, Kew will partner with the Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden.
