澳大利亚护理教育工作者的挑战
Thank you for inviting me here to discuss my role as a Nurse Educator in a critical care area in Australia. The information I am giving is specific to my workplace although the roles of Educator and Clinical Nurse Educator within ward areas is widespread in Australia. * Australia has a population of 21 million, made up of over 160 ethnic backgrounds, practicing 160 different religious ideologies and speaking over 200 languages. (Seaton 2010) 1 in 4 Australians now have an ethnic origin from outside Australia We have 19 nationalities working within our ICU, all but 5 of these use English as their second language. * * * * * Wollongong Hospital has close collaborative ties with the University of Wollongong’s School of Nursing and School of Medicine In NSW, nursing students attend full time university for 3 years with 18-22 weeks clinical placement in this time. This can be followed by 1 yr as a New Graduate in the hospital system where they participate in the transitional New Graduate programme. Nurses participating in the program gain experience in two practice areas over a 12 month period. The program continues throughout the year with ongoing education, including reflective study days and a choice of several practical education sessions.At Wollongong a sought after second year speciality program is then offered in acute areas of ICU, Emergency Department, Operating Theatre, Paediatrics Neo-Natal Nursing. It is the aim of Wollongong Hospital to offer all its new graduates a position once they have completed their New Graduate program. * TWH has a combined unit with 10 ICU beds and 8 HDU beds. Staffing 1nurse for 1 patient in ICU 1 nurse for 2 patients in HDU. Staffing – 100+ RN’s with experience ranging from New Graduate to many yrs ICU experience. Dept of Health (DoH) requires we take 3-4 new graduates annually within the New Grad programme framework.
