School of architecture, Xi’an University of Architecture Technology Xi’an 710055 ，China ） Abstract: Based on the fractal theory and rank-size rule, the rank-size dimension for urban system in North Shannxi area was calculated, the relationship between population distribution and urban scale in this area was discussed and the population distribution pattern in urban area was developed. These works can be used as the foundations for urban planning. Through reasonable planning to make the accommodations of the distribution of the population with the environment and the distribution of the population with the local economical development state, the sustainable development of civil life in this area could be promoted.
