For many small and medium manufacturing enterprises, the purchasing function is usually the weakest link as it is determined by the characteristics of small and medium manufacturing enterprises. Hence, this paper will examine the characteristics of purchasing in small and medium manufacturing enterprise, being a special member of the enterprise ecology. This paper outlines the characteristics of the small and medium manufacturing enterprise and their purchasing department, like for example, long lead-time, high quantity of small batch sizes, wide variety of goods purchased, et cetera, and categorizes them. The small and medium manufacturing enterprises are analyzed based on their purchasing process, plan, strategy, cost and personnel. From studying a large volume of documentary evidence, a conclusion is drawn on problems inherent with small and medium manufacturing enterprises purchasing, like purchasing concepts, personnel, process and methods and proposing solutions for each of them.
