! ! Territory, migration and Historical Memory: An Analysis of Two Types of Societies in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau WANG, Ming Ke “” “” “”“” This article explains that the Qiang, the Tibetans, and the Yi, living along the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau belong to two different types of societies. The Qiang’s and Tibetans’ social type can be labeled as “mountain deities society”, featured by their insistence on territories and related boundaries of self and others, unwilling to move, territory-based social identity, and shallow family genealogical memory. The Yi, on the other hand, are “heroic ancestor society”, featured by do not insist living in one place and always willing to move to a new habitat, consanguinity-based social identity, and abundant genealogical memory. This article also suggests that developing from “mountain deity society” toward “heroic ancestor society” might be a common trend in the development of early human society.
