Abstract Eff ects of samp e thickness on the fracture toughness of materia s are investigated. A mathematica expression on the re-
ation betw een fracture roughness and samp e thickness is obtained , by adopting Griff ith. s theory of surf ace energy, Barenb att. s theory
of cohesive force and Dugda e. s theory of narrow str ip yie ding . Two kinds of test materia s, LY12CZ( L- T) and TC4( L-T) , are used to
verify theoretica equation.
