Richard Wagner (1813—1883) Wagner was acknowledged as the master of German opera, and one of the most progressive composers in history. As a youth Wagner was fascinated by literature, particularly the plays of William Shakespeare. Through his teens he was increasingly attracted to composing. Wagners monumental cycle of four musical dramas collectively titled The Ring of the Nibelungs took 22 years to complete, and stands as one of the most remarkable and influential achievements in Western music. 2. Rene Descartes (1596—1650)Descartes, a famous French philosopher, is widely considered the Father of modern philosophy. He was the first scientist-philosopher to organize the process of thought and link it to the meaning of ones very existence. His famous argument was Cogito ergo sum (I think; therefore I exist). He is famous for supporting Cartesian dualism, the view that mind and body are separate, distinct substances. He is also one of the greatest scientists in history, having worked on mathematics, mechanics, optics, and many other fields. 3. Cogito ergo sum It is Latin for I think; therefore I exist, a starting point in Descartes philosophy. Through this ultimate rationalistic view, Descartes attempts to prove the existence of ones self not through ones sense experience but through reasoning. His logic is flawed however, because Descartes presupposes the I in I think.
