What is a test ?
• A test has been defined as
– a subjection to conditions that show the real
character of the thing”
• However, testing is a continuing operation to
provide information throughout the complete
evolution of the system.

Purposes of testing
• The purposes of testing are numerous.
– A test may be performed to see whether a certain configuration or item is
feasible.
– A test may be used to determine which of several configurations is the
optimum with respect to performance, reliability, cost, modes of behaviour
