FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO SUCCESSFUL CAREERS FOR WOMEN IN ACCOUNTING Cherie Fretwell, Troy State University Phenix City E. Jeany Roberts, Troy State University Phenix City Ed Pappanastos, Troy State University ABSTRACT Three major human resource issues relating to working women are family issues, career advancement within firms, and retention of women in professions such as accounting. Trying to balance a career and family often interfere with a womans freedom to completely devote herself to a career, which in turn affects career success, especially in the public accounting profession. Women are not staying or advancing in accounting in comparison to their male counterparts. For many organizations, however, addressing retention and advancement issues for women and minorities has become an important aspect of their culture. The purpose of this study was to identify career patterns, barriers, and factors that contribute to the career progression and success of women in accounting. Introduction Three major human resource issues relating to working women are family issues, career advancement within firms, and retention of women in professions such as accounting. Trying to balance a career and family often interfere with a womans freedom to completely devote herself to a career, which in turn affects career success, especially in the public accounting profession. “The changing nature of the work-force, with greater numbers of dual-career and single parent households, increases the potential for conflict to occur between work and family responsibilities and makes work-family conflict an important work-related issue” (Boles, Johnston Hair, 1997).
