It is essential for engineers to have a working knowledge of how to produce a high quality product cheaper, better, and faster. Customers demand value – meaning they need a product that works well for them at a reasonable price. The following equation use to be the norm in many industries for determining sales price: Cost + Profit = Price In other words, if the cost of producing a product increases, that cost can be passed on to the consumer (customer). In a highly competitive world, that is not valid.
