They include deposits of weli-crystallized kaolinite and also of the 6-axis disordered kaolin mineral. The latter give exceptionally clear r-ray diagrams which have been studied in greater detail than has previously been possible. Morphologi- cally the disordered kaolin shows small but well-formed hexagonal plates. The cation ex- change capacities have been mee.suredand appear to be related to substitutions in both tetrahedral and octahedral lattice positions. The main chemical difierence between the ordered and disordered clays appears to lie in the amount of tetrahedral substitution.
