Influenced by the thoughts of pre-Socratic Greek philosophers, Le Clézio links the four basic natural elements—earth, water, fire and air—with specific natural spaces such as land, sea and sky, and constructs a poetic natural space where characters reestablish their ties with the world. The exterior natural space echoes with the interior spiritual space, thus leading the characters to the enlightening divine space.
