Abs tract: A type o f friction dam p er ch aracterized a continuously variable pos-t sliding stiffness is proposed, wh ich
prov ides an increasing post-slid ing force w ith the accretion of the deform ation. It is possible to ad ju st the output
force accord ing to the perform ance targets at different earthqu ake levels, thu s en lighten ing a practical approach to
the explic it stru ctura l control to satisfy a ll of the requ ired perform ance ob jectives. The proposed dam per consists of
a p iston, a rubber layer, friction plates and the jacket. T he frict ion p la tes and the inside of the jacket con st itute the
contact p air, o r the sliding surface. T he friction p la tes are fixed on the p iston through the rubber layer w hich pro-
vides the norm a l pressure on the slid ing surface. T he rad iu s o f sliding surface varies continuously a long the ax is of
the jacket. Both ana lyses and expermi ents reveal that the parabo la sh ape of slid ing surface would introdu ce a cubic
force-d isp lacem ent re lation sh ip, wh ich is helpful to prevent a stru cture from co llapse.
