How is language learned in classrooms different from language used in real life? Communicative Competence : includes both the knowledge about the language and the knowledge about how to use the language appropriately in communicative situations. According to Hymes, communicative competence includes four aspects: Communicative competence has four aspects : 1.knowing whether or not something is formally possible(possibility) Eg. I yesterday from Scotland came. 2.knowing whether something is understandable to human beings. Eg.A: Could you tell me the way to the railway station? B: The rain destroyed the crops. 3.knowing whether something is in line with social norms (feasibility). Eg. Four windows are in the walls of the room. 4.knowing whether or not something is in fact done (appropriateness). A: Wanna go to the movies? I’ve got an extra ticket? B: I accept with great pleasure your kind invitation. Communicative competence : not only the language form, but also what to say to whom and how to say it appropriately in any given situation. It includes: knowledge of what to say, when, how, where, to whom and what kind of relationship we have with the person (s) involved in the interaction. Why don’t you close the door?
