To explore the relationship of MMP - 2 and high altitude periodontal diseases. Methods To set the chronic periodontitis model in rat exposed to hypoxia simulating high altitude. The serum expression of MMP-2 in rat was measured by ELISA in the normal control（N）, the normoxia periodontitis（P1）, the hypoxia controlH）, and the hypoxia periodontitis（P2）. Results The density of MMP - 2 in each group: N group is 92.00±21.78 ng / ml, P1 group is 118.09±25.01 ng / ml, H group is 102.03±21.30 ng / ml ,P2 group is 159.19?4.13 ng / ml , P1 groups was markedly higher than N group , P2 group was markedly higher than H group , H group was markedly higher than N group , P2 group was markedly higher than P1 group (P0.01), the density of MMP - 2 in serum was highest in P2 group. Conclusions Hypoxia up-regulates the serum expression of MMP - 2, futher promotes destrucation of periodontal tissue in rat. MMP - 2 plays an important role in the destruction of periodontal tissue in hypoxia peridontitis, may be involved in the development of high altitude periodontal diseases.
