NABERS ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 Tom Grosskopf Director – Metro Branch Regional Operations Office of Environment and Heritage NABERS National Administrator Dear Stakeholders Over the last 15 years, the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) has grown to become one of Australia’s most successful building efficiency programs. The trusted and reliable NABERS benchmarks of building environmental performance are now a routine feature of government policies, industry programs and commercial property agreements, and mandatory NABERS Energy for offices ratings are now even required by Commonwealth legislation. By taking complex information about the operational efficiency of a building and translating it into a simple six-star rating scale, NABERS has transformed the way we understand and talk about the environmental impact of commercial buildings. The NABERS program continues to be highly valued by the commercial property market. Buildings with better ratings attract higher investment and rental returns and have lower vacancy rates and outgoings. Importantly, competition for these ratings has delivered clear environmental benefits by stimulating significant investment in energy and water efficiency. Re-rated buildings are now demonstrating annual savings of 380,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas, 440,000 megawatt hours of electricity and 1.6 million litres of water. This financial year the NABERS program has celebrated some important milestones. With the help of our industry partners, we introduced the new NABERS Energy for data centres rating, which will be central to efforts to help one of the fastest growing energy usage sectors to measure and improve their efficiency. We crossed the Tasman with the ground-breaking launch of NABERS Energy for offices in New Zealand. We also witnessed unparalleled growth in NABERS Energy for offices ratings here in Australia and nearly three quarters of our national office space has now been
