0 Introduction
Theselastyears．themathematicianshavebeenmoreandmoreinterestedinMode1Theory．
Thisiscertainly duetothesuccessesthatithasobtainedin otherbranchesofmathematics．
Nevertheless．Ihavethefeelingthatmodeltheoryisstillnotreallyunderstoodbyalargepart
ofourcommunity．W hatisitsproblematic? W hatisitsrelationwith theclassicalpartsof
mathematics?W hatisitsrelationwithloglc?Itistotrytoanswerthesequestions．andalsoto
demystifyModelTheory．thatIhavewrittenthispaper．
ThedifficultiesencounteredbynonlogicianstounderstandModelTheoryoriginateperhaps
inthecentralnotionofdefinablesets．Certainly，itisanew notion，seldom tackledduringthe
classicalstudiesinmathematics．Yet，itisnotadifficultnotiondemandingalonglearningin
logic，butaplainmathematicalone，withaquitesimpledefinition．Thisnotionwillbeintroduced
usingthelanguagecommontoallmathematicians．Thereferencetologicwillcomelater，when
