坎特伯雷故事集分析

By Kimberry;About Author; Geoffrey Chaucer(1343-1400) He was the son of a well-to-do wine merchant living in London, and his life was spent in close association with the court. He most likely received zome education at the Inner Temple, a highly privileged legal society in London. The institution offered a liberal education that prepared him for his later careers at court and in business. And he was influenced by French literture of Greece and Rome while he was in Italy, where the Renaissance had begun. Chaucer opened a brilliant page in English literature and had a profound influence on many important English poets, who was regarded as theFather of English Poetry. And he introduced from France the rhymed couplet of iambic pentameter →Heroic Couplet. He was burried in westminster Abby-the poets corner. ; Chaucer lived through a time of incredible tension in the English social sphere. The Black Death, which ravaged England during Chaucers childhood and remained widespread afterward, wiped out an estimated thirty to fifty percent of the population. Consequently, the labor force gained increased leverage and was able to bargain for better wages, which led to resentment from the nobles and propertied classes. When Chaucer was growing up, London was pretty much run by a merchant oligarchy, which attempted to control both the aristocracy and the lesser artisan classes.; Chaucers political sentiments are unclear, for although The Canterbury Tales documents the various social tensions in the manner of the popular genre of estates satire, the narrator refrains from making overt political stataements, and what he does say is in no way thought to represent Chaucers own sentiments ;Key Facts Full title: The Canterbury Tales Author: Geoffrey Chaucer Type of work: Poetry(two tales are in prose:the Tale of Melibee and the Parsons Tale) Genres: Narrative collection of poems, character portraits, parody, estates satire, romance, fabliau.
