Schoo l o f Civil Eng ineering , Guangzhou Univer sity, Guang zho u?? 510006, China) Abstract: T he total co ntent s and chemical f ract ions o f heavy metals ( Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni) in sew ag e sludge w ere analy zed in the present study w ith T essier!s procedure. T he bio av ailability of these heavy metals w as also studied by pot t ing plant ing of Dockleaf Knot?? w eed. T he result s showed that the total content s of Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni w ere all less than the Chinese sew age sludge criteria for ag ricultural use ( soil pH ?6. 5) . As for Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb, residual fraction w as the predominant f ract ion, w hile for Cu and N i, organic f rac?? tio n w as the predominant f ract ion. T he proport ions o f unbioavailable forms o f Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb w er e more than 50%, w hich w as favorable for using sludg e in agr iculture. T he ro ot s of Do ckleaf Knotw eed co uld accumulate mor e heavy metals than shoot s. T he heavy metals absorbed by pot ted plant included no t only ex chang eable and carbonate forms, but also iron?? manganese ox ides and org anic fo rms w hich w ere released under certain condit io ns.
