Translatability 1.Definition of translatability “Translatability, inevitably coupled with untranslatability, is an operative concept in the sense that it actively helps structure an entire field of decisions and principles. It can open up ways of solving practical problems(as in Wilss 1977or Koller1979)and can offer new approaches for the discussion of more Theoretical and fundamental issues(as in Davidson 1974/1984) 2.Translatability of imagery J. A. Cuddon defines imagery as a general term that covers the use of language to represent objects, actions, feelings, thoughts, ideas, states of mind and any sensory or ex-sensory experience (1998: 413) The translatability of imagery will be discussed from the perspective of static imagery and dynamic imagery. “朝辞白帝彩云间,千里江陵一日还/两岸猿声啼不住,轻舟已过万重山”(李白《早发白帝城》) “彩云,轻舟,万重山”can be thought as static imagery. dynamic imagery refers to the dynamic description in CCP: the imagery presented by the verbs of“还”and“过” “彩云”(colored clouds): express the poets great delight upon his being absolved from exile. The“轻舟”(light boat) passing“万重山”(serried mountains) in a day vividly represents the poets anxiety to home. Static Imagery 马致远 天净沙·秋思 枯藤老树昏鸦, 小桥流水人家, 古道西风瘦马。 夕阳西下, 断肠人在天涯。 Dynamic Imagery Although there always are not many dynamic images in a poem, they are substantially important to the artistic conception. Because more often dynamic imagery becomes the poems eye, which is the essential part of the whole poem. The following poem was written by Yang Yuhuan(杨玉环) 赠张玉容舞(杨玉环) 罗袖动香香不已 红莫袅袅秋烟里 轻云岭上乍摇尸 嫩柳池边初拂水 In the first line there is a dynamic image“动”.It was translated into sway combined with Scents, Sweet Scents. The assonance employed, too. In the third line, there is a dynamic image“摇”.It was translated into several dynamic images puff, flutter, blow:successfully recreated in the TL a beautiful scene of dancing.
