Since 1990s, the frequent outbreak of white spot syndrome (WSS) disease has severely hampered the healthy development of shrimp aquaculture. In the past decades, the rapid research progresses have been documented on shrimp immunity and the control of white spot syndrome. This review briefly describes the essential features of WSS and shrimp antiviral immunity, and summarizes the main immunological principles and technological strategies for disease prevention and control in shrimp aquaculture against white spot syndrome with a variety of applications in order to provide promising references for the healthy and sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture.
