Use sketches, not words, to illustrate the material, work method, gauge or quality control device, tool used, and fixture for each process option. A quick and crude sketch is better here than a detailed drawing. As you sketch out the process alternatives, follow these guidelines: Material – show the value-added step or transformation, asking “what changes?” Method – show the function of the person’s hands, asking “what do the do?” Gauge – show the device used to ensure 100% quality, asking “how do we gauge?” Tool – show the actual tool (cutter, drill, etc.) that does the process, asking “what makes the feature?” Fixture – show how the work piece is held, asking “what holds the part?” It is important to stress that only two-word, “verb, noun” combinations are acceptable when describing what happens to the material in the “method” column. Focus the minds of the team members on describing the function and the feature created in the simplest terms possible. As you fill out the Process At A Glance with the 7 alternatives, use one page for each process step. Draw sketches, avoiding words whenever possible so that it can be understood “at a glance”. First think about options or alternatives for accomplishing the process step. As an example, rather than cleaning a part you may suggest not contaminating it in the first place. Then, think about the various options you have for accomplishing the alternative.
