A Survey of English Lexicology Lecturer: Li Hongzhen September, 2009 Introduction Requirements: ---- attendance ---- participation in in-class discussion ---- assignments Introduction---- Lexicology Lexicology (词汇学) Lexicology, Greek morphemes, lexikon and logie. Lexis, lexicon, all words or vocabulary in a given language.(词库,词汇) Logie, ‘learning’ or ‘ the study of ’ Lexicology, is a branch of Linguistics, the scientific study of lexis, the words ,dealing with words, their origin, development, history, structure, meaning and application. Aims and significance of the Course of English Lexicology Vocabulary is one of the three elements of language: speech sounds, grammar and vocabulary. For English majors, it is a must to acquire a basic knowledge of lexicology. (use correctly) The course is aimed at giving learners a systematic description of vocabulary. The course helps learners enlarge their vocabulary, improve their ability to analyze and use words. 5) Theory guides practice. Theory of lexicology is useful in study of vocabulary, so it is true of the learning of vocabulary. Introduction ----Two approaches to the study of English Lexicology Two approaches to the study of English Lexicology synchronic(共时的) diachronic(历时的) synchrony diachrony (chronology) Synchronic means describing a language as it exists at one point in time. (a language at one period of time) Diachronic means being concerned with historical development of a language.
