Dieter J kei （Institute of Geographicai Sciences ，Free University of Beriin ，Maiteserstr ，74 - 100 ，12249 Beriin ，Germany ） Abstract Ferdinand von Richthofen was the first foreign geoiogist gathering fundamentai knowiedge on the geoiogy of China in the course of seven expeditions between 1868 and 1872 . As his traveis were partiy funded by foreign sponsors ，he was heid to report economicaiiy appiicabie resuits. Thus reports were written on traffic iines and trade routes in China ，the occurrence of coai deposits ，their guaiity and size ， mineabiiity and competitiveness on the worid market . Important scientific pubiications are those on economic ，transport and popuiation geography in this context he created the term “Siik Road ”and cartography . Together with German cartographers he deveioped a new method of orographic mountain presentation in maps and corrected existing maps on China. In the fieid of geoiogy he created geoiogicai maps ，pubiished together with his orographic maps in his two-voiume “Atias von China ”，together with four text voiumes with numerous cross sections and stratigraphic tabies ，iaying the foundations of the geoiogy of China and East Asia.
