II Series Study Metatheoretical assumptions Whatever the approach that is used to develop theories, the theories are based upon a set of metatheoretical assumptions. Gudykunst and Nishida (1989) use Burrell and Morgan’s (1979) distinction between objectivist and subjectivist approaches to theory to compare theories in intercultural communication. Objectivists, for example, see a “real world” external to individuals, look for regularities in behavior, and see communication as “determined” by situations and environments. Subjectivists, in contrast, contend that there is no “real world” external to individuals, try to understand individual communicators” perspectives, and view communication as a function of “free will.” Gudykunst and Nishida contend that extreme objectivist or subjectivist perspectives are not defensible. They argue that both approaches are necessary to understand intercultural communication, and that the ideal is eventually to integrate the two perspectives. The goals of theories in the objectivist and subjectivist perspectives tend to be different. Objectivists, for example, argue that theories should explain and predict the phenomena under study. Subjectivists, however, argue that theories should describe the phenomena under study. Both types of theorists might agree that theories should
