In order to study th e prob em of soi sa in ity in th e oases of arid reg ion s, w e use trad itiona statistics and geostatist ics com b in ed w ith the geograph ica information system ( G IS) techno ogy to invest igate the spatia variab i ity and spatia d istribu tion of so i sa t content in the d e ta of theW eigan and Kuqa rivers. T he resu ts show that the so i sa t content in three successive ayers in th is oasis exh ib it m oderate spatia variation, and th e d egree of th is variation decreases as so i dep th increases. Both th e stru ctu re and the stoch astic factors are of mi portant inf u ence for the spatia variation, and have a strong spat ia autocorre ation. The rationa samp ing quantity of three ayers shou d b e at 0. 05 eve w ith a 20% re ative error. G aussian m ode s w ere fitted for sem ivariance of 10 - 30 cm and 30 - 50 cm ayers.
