A brief introduction of Jane Austen and her Pride and Prejudice① Jane Austen was born on December 16,1775, in Hampshire and died in 1817. Jane Austen was known to be a prim young girl, who nevertheless had a lively zest for fun and a keen sense of humor. But she grew up to be a rather stiff, proper woman. She exhibited in life the same detachment that she practiced in her writing. She was aloof and uncommunicative in company and avoided literary society. Pride and Prejudice probably was the most popular of Jane Austen?s finished novels. In a sense, it was also the first to be composed. The original version, First Impressions, was completed in 1797. However, it was rejected for publication and no copy has survived. The work was rewritten in 1812 and published in 1813 as Pride and Prejudice. The final form must be a thorough rewriting of the original effort, for it is a patent representative of the mature Austen. Moreover, the story clearly takes place in the early nineteenth century rather than in the late eighteenth. In her early writing, Jane Austen began to define the limits of her fictional world. From the first there was a steady emphasis on character. The novelist consciously elected to work within a restricted sphere made up of a few families of relatives with their friends and acquaintances.
