Through increased awareness and understanding, therefore, people pay more attention to foster their ability in cross-culture communication in order to avoid dispensable conflict and make communication smoothly. However, no matter what kinds of cultural contexts a cross-culture communication is manipulated in, taboo is regarded as one of the most important factors to determine whether the communication ends up in success or failure. This thesis introduces the main aspects of the linguistic taboos between English and Chinese, and also introduces some related factors. On this basis, the thesis makes a comparison of similarities and differences to help readers to have a clear and systematic understanding of taboos in English and Chinese. The practical significances of this thesis are to reduce misunderstanding and conflicts in cross-culture communication, to improve people’s awareness and to develop people’s communicative competence, so as to help people understand each other thoroughly and communicate effectively and successfully in cross-culture communication.
