Extraction of Phosphorous from Steelmaking Slag by Leaching ·1 · Extraction of Phosphorous from Steelmaking Slag by Leaching Kim Sun-Joong, Gao Xu, Uedaand Shigeru, Kitamura Shin-ya (Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba-ku, Sendai 980-8577, Japan) Abstract In order to recyclephosphorusfrom steelmaking slag, a separation processby leaching has been proposed by current authors. The principle of this leaching process was to utilize the differencesin the water-solubility betweenthe C2S-C3 Psolid solution and the other phases. Experimentswere carried out to determinethe effect of pH on the dissolution behavior of various elements in the steelmaking slagwith and without free-CaO phase. When the pH was decreased, the dissolution behavior of Ca, Si, P and Fe from the steelmaking slag was increased. Furthermore, at a pH of 3, the dissolution ratio of P from steelmaking slag without the free-CaO was larger than that from steelmaking slag including free-CaO. Key words steelmaking slag, C S-C P, P resources, leaching process 2 3 1 Introduction Steelmaking slag which contains phosphate can be treated as a raw material for producingphosphate fertilizer. Matsubae et al.[1] reported the material flow of P in Japan. They revealedtwo important pieces of information with regard to the P resources in Japan. The first is that humans and soil are the main consumers of phosphorus. Both human-consumed phosphorus and soil-accumulated phosphorus are difficult to recycle for fertilizer. The second is that, natural phosphate rock is the only resource for phosphatic fertilizers now, and the amount of P from
