Things begin to look up. Three years after the end of World War II, the first BMW motorcycle is built in Munich with the permission of the Allies. The single-cylinder R 24 celebrates its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1948. ? Cars from Munich. Post-war production continues with the large sedans, coupés, convertibles and roadsters of the 501, 502, 503 and 507 models, which are built at the main plant in Munich for the first time. In spite of innovative V8 aluminium engines, these are not successful economically. A roof over your head. The market demands economical cars that offer a solid roof over your head with motorcycles no longer in such high demand. BMW’s solution to this problem is to build the BMW Isetta and the BMW 600, later the BMW 700. The turning point. In the second half of the 1950s the situation becomes increasingly difficult for BMW. The balance sheet of 1956 shows a deficit of more than six million marks. Because of this precarious economic situation, the proposal is made at the general shareholders’ meeting on 9 December 1959 to sell BMW to Daimler-Benz.Due to a balance sheet error, however, the sale can be averted. BMW is able to remain independent as Dr. Herbert Quandt becomes principal shareholder and Kurt Golda, the chairman of BMW’s works committee, provides support. BMW 1500 – the “new class“. With the 1500 model, BMW is extremely successful in moving into a “new class“ of sporty, compact medium-range limousines and is thus able to overcome its financial crisis. A completely new car has emerged: sporty, compact, functional and versatile. This model paves the way back towards success after the arduous post-war years. The BMW 1500 model, presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1961 before its sales launch in 1962, is the first model to feature the kick in the C-pillar that became a characteristic feature of all BMW cars up to the present. ?
