Unit Three The Information Age Section A Privacy in the Information Age PART I Background Information 1. Cybergold In 1995, Nat Goldhaber founded Cybergold in Oakland, California. Cybergold, Inc. was a leading internet incentives and payment technology company that rewards consumers with cash and other rewards for responding to Web-based advertisements and programs. With more than seven million members, Cybergold provided its clients with an efficient means of reaching interested and responsive consumers on the Internet. Cybergold members received a wide selection of programs and activities to participate in and to generate cash, which can be used online for purchases or offline by having it transferred to a VISA card or a bank checking account or donating it to charity. Cybergold’s partners included Visa USA, MBNA, AOL, EarthLink, and Autobytel. It went public in 1999 and was acquired by MyP, Inc. in August 2000 in a stock-for-stock deal worth approximately $160 million. In 2000, MyP, Inc. officially announced that it finalized its acquisition of Cybergold. The combination creates the Internet’s single largest loyalty marketing program, according to Media Metrix, reaching a combined audience of more than 17 million users. PART II Language Study 1.
