Festivals around the World Part One Analysis of the Teaching Material Introduction This passage is from the NEW SENIOR ENGLISH FOR CHINA STUDENT’S BOOK 3, unit one. It is the first period of this unit .In this period, I will mainly focus on warming up and pre-reading .In warming up, I will present them with some music which is concerning about festivals and ask them to guess what festival it is .The purpose of my design is to arise the students’ interest and get them involved in the class . The following part is pre-reading .In this part, I have listed four Chinese festivals that they know and I’d like to have them work in groups and talk about “When do they take place? What do they celebrate? And what people do at that time?” .And share what they know about festivals, then fill in the blanks. The purpose of my design is to improve the students’ speaking ability and enrich their vocabularies by talking about the festivals. The next part is reading. The students will be helped to read the text entitled FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD, then, think about the topic sentence of each paragraph and the structure of the text, and I will analyze the structure of the passage. At last, the students are asked to read the passage again, then get some detailed information to fill in the chart. The purpose of my design is to make the students master the reading skill of skimming and get more information about the text, thus knowing different cultures in the world. Basis of teaching theory and teaching guiding New Syllabuses require that senior students should develop integrating skills, especially improving the ability of communication in English. Senior One students are supposed to achieve 6-graded objectives in the aspect of speaking skills proposed in the New Syllabuses. Language is acquired as learners actively engaged in attempting to communicate in the target language. Therefore I adopt communicative principles and task-based language teaching.
