Remarks by an Indonesian High Official at the Launching of “Indonesia International Friendly Contact” Distinguished Guests, It gives me great pleasure to be able to join you today on the auspicious occasion of the launching of “Indonesia International Friendly Contact.” I feel that the launching of this friendship association is held at an impeccable time. This year we commemorate a significant event in the history of the relationship between Indonesia and China. Indonesia was one of the first countries to recognize China and it was 60 years ago that diplomatic relations were officially established between our two countries. The bilateral relations between Indonesia and China reached a new high in 2005. Since then, we have been witnessing the enhancement of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in all fields, including economic cooperation. This year, the bilateral trade volume amounted to US$28.6 billion, and we have set the target for trade with China to reach US$50 billion in 2014. In addition, the Government of Indonesia has also determined that to achieve sustainable development, cooperation should be focused on the improvement of infrastructure, as well as technology transfer for food and energy security. Our cooperation targets should not be limited only to reaching higher trade volume, but also promoting mutual understanding between the people of our two countries. In Indonesia, Chinese have been an important ethnic group since the pre-independence period of the country, and even long before that. There have been considerable and revolutionary changes in the government’s policies toward Chinese. This is now an era of rediscovery.
