Unit 11 The Olympic Games
Section A The Olympic Rings
Directions: Listen to a talk about the Olympics Rings and choose the best answer to each question you hear at the end of the talk.
The Olympic flag features the emblem of the Olympic Games. It reinforces the idea that the Olympic Movement is international and welcomes all countries of the world to join. At the end of each Olympic Games, the mayor of that host city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host city. It then rests at the town hall of the next host city for four years until the Opening Ceremony of their Olympic Games.
The Olympic Rings on the flag were created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games in 1913- It was first displayed on the Olympic Flag at the 7th Olympiad in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. The five interlocking rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. It is important to emphasize that Pierre de Coubertin never said nor wrote that the colors of the rings were linked with the different continents.
Today the Olympic Rings logo is one of the most popular logos in the world. The results of a recent survey carried out in Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Great Britain and the USA showed that 92% of those questioned correctly identified the Olympic rings, which made them the most-recognized symbol. They were followed by the McDonalds and Shell emblems (88%), Mercedes (74%) and the United Nations (36%).
Question 1: What will happen to the Olympic Flag at the end of each Olympic Games?
Question 2: When did the Olympic Rings make its first appearance in public?
Question 3: What are the five colors of the Rings reading from left to right?
