China Environmental Science, 2008,28(12)1100~1104 Abstract Based on the laboratory scale experiment and mixed sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) in the north of China, the start-up and operation efficiency of pilot-scale mesophilic(35ºC) two-phase anaerobic digestion of mixed sludge were examined. The ratio of 1:1 for primary sludge and waste sludge was favorable to increasing the digestion efficiency during the start-up. The volatile solid (VS) removal efficiency was 36% when the influent organic loading rate (OLR) was held at 2.15 kg/(m3⋅d) and the total hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 10 days. Correspondingly, the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) for methanogenic phase was 0.31 L/(g·d). During the operation time of 60 days, the volatile fally acid (VFA) concentration in acidogenic phase stabilized in the range of 1600 to 2000 mg/L, and that in the methanogenic phase stabilized in the range of 300 to 500mg/L. The pH value of methanogenic phase was between 6.8 and 7.2, which was favorable for the growth of methanogenic microorganism. Key words
