Earth Science Frontiers , 2005, 12( 3) :101- 111 Abst act: Basins and mountains, two basic structural units developed on the continental lithospheric surface, depend on each other for ex istence in space. Their material is transformed between each other , and their surficial topo raphy is adjusted and balanced by each other. They, thus, have a close couplin relationship. The eometric problems of ba- sin and mountain systems include primary basin and mountain structure in different sta es, the deformational style of ran es, basin-fill framework, and the distribution of structural belts and blocks. The kinematics of basin and moun- tain systems deal with the overlappin , transformation and mi ration history between basins and mountains; the un- roofin , exhumation and uplift of basement and cover of mountains; the subsidence, sedimentation and provenance of basins; the destination of eroded sediments; the erosion of the mountain
