AS-Level Maths: Core 1 for Edexcel C1.4 Algebra and functions 4 Point out that the graph of y2 = x is a rotation of the graph of y = x2 about the origin. Explore graphs of the form y = k n√x where n is a positive integer. Then, observe the difference between curves where n is positive and curves where n is negative. Start by observing curves where k is positive and then look at curves where k is negative. Compare changing the value of k to the vertical stretches shown later. This can be compared with solving simultaneous equations. The difference is that we are only interested in the x-value of the coordinates of the points of intersection. Ensure the students understand that, unlike simultaneous equations where we want the values of both x and y, when solving an equation in x we are only interested in the x-values of the coordinates. Ask students to tell you what is special about the line y = 0 before revealing that it is the x-axis. Graphical methods for finding the roots of quadratic equations are also discussed in the quadratics presentation. Quadratic equations with irrational roots can be solved by completing the square. Cubic equations are more difficult to solve. In the first instance, a graph can be used to find approximate solutions. We can then find more accurate solutions using other methods such as trial and improvement. The solutions are given by the x-coordinate of each point of intersection. Rotations of functions are not covered here but are mentioned for the sake of completion. Establish that for y = f(x) + a, if a is positive the curve y = f(x) is translated a units upwards. If a is negative, the curve y = f(x) is translated a units downwards. Establish that for f(x + a), if a is negative the curve is translated a units to the right (in the positive horizontal direction).
