Some are a kind of important food to people; some animals are regarded as free labors for human, which aren’t fair to their work. Their furs were also good dress material for ancient human to keep warm. Some are a kind of close friends of people. Therefore, they play a very important role in the lives of the Chinese people. There are a lot of words and expressions connected with different kinds of animals in English and Chinese. Under the background of the different languages and different cultures, every animal word not only has denotation but also has cultural connotations. And some animal words in Chinese and English are the same or similar in cultural connotations, because the Chinese people and the English people have the same capabilities of thought, and have the same attributes and features. However, there are lots of animal words having different cultural connotations due to the differences of customs, geographical environments, religion and history. These animal words and phrases have different cultural connotations between Chinese and English.?In recent years, many linguists,?“like Chen Dezhang, Hu Wenzhong, have paid much attention to cross-cultural communication. They devote much effort to pragmatics, comparison of languages and cultures between English and Chinese. They also published many papers on the comparison of animal words in the two languages”. 1 This paper will try to compare the cultural connotations and emotional colorings of animal words in English and Chinese. Learning about the cultural differences between English and Chinese in animal words can help the English learners to understand the different cultures deeply and remove the barriers in the cross cultural communications.?II.
