KEY POINTS Early American literature was concerned with journals and recording daily history. It was not imaginative, and the Puritans generally regarded imaginative literature as dangerous because it distracted people from religion. As ideas changed, and Enlightenment ideas spread from Europe, imaginative literature took a foothold in America. Writers like Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper were the first American writers to write originally about America.
