PHIL 2931Chinese Philosophy Chinese Buddhism Schedule History Basic Concepts Chinese Buddhism: School of Middle Path and School of Ch’an/Zen *Aim: to learn how Buddhism develops in China as “Chinese Buddhism,” and how it affects Chinese philosophy in history (Not a full picture of Buddhism) History Buddhism entered China in around Eastern Han Dynasty (around 58-75AD), or a bit earlier (not sure exactly when) The timeline is overlapping with Han Confucianism and Neo-Taoism. Indeed, terms in Buddhism and Taoism are always “interchangeable” (two stages) “Wu” “Wu-Wei” “Yu” are all in Chinese Buddhism. (see also Chan 336-342) * Realms of Rebirth There are six realms of rebirth, determined by karmic merit Lowest: Hell; place of torment Second, animals Third, ghosts – unhappy spirits filled with insatiable desires Fourth, titans – demonic, violent beings Fifth, humans Sixth, gods Basic Concepts in Buddhism Life is suffering – dukkha (And Four Noble Truth) Karma (業 “Yeh”) Avidya (無明“Wu-Ming”) Enlightenment (菩提 Bodhi) Nirvana Mahayana Buddhism in China Different schools in Buddhism explain these concepts differently. Some schools in China follow the teachings from India very strictly. They can only be considered as “Buddhism in China” (i.e. not Chinese Buddhism) E.g. Hsuan-Tsang 玄奘 (596-664) Wei-Shih Tsuang (School of Subjective Idealism/ Consciousness-Only) 唯識宗 (See Chan 370-395) Interlude: Journey to the West 西遊記 Chinese Buddhism Buddhism that has accepted some concepts from Taoism, becoming a unique version of Buddhism. And also affecting other Chinese philosophy (e.g. Sung-Ming Confucianism) There are several of them. We will mainly focus on “Middle-Path School” and “Ch’an/Zen School” Hsing Tsung 性宗 School of Universal Mind Nirvana = identification of the individual with the Universal Mind, or Buddha-Nature. Hsing (nature) = Hsin (Mind) Introducing idea of Universal Mind in Chinese thought Fung p. 244 K’ung Tsung 空宗 School of Emptiness (School of the Middle Path)
