Key Laboratory of Data Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (Renmin University of China), Beijing 100872) Abstract: The coming era of big data, particularly the introduction of data science, is having a significant influence on the development of information science. First, the basic terms, theoretical foundations, relevant state-of-the-art studies, and emerging directions are discussed in depth. Then, it is proposed that data science will provide informa- tion science with a novel theoretical foundations, as well as the alternative methods, technologies, and tools is con- sidered based upon a detailed discussion regarding the nexus between data science and domain knowledge. Finally, implications of data science on the field of information science are described from five separate perspectives: theo- retical foundations, scientific roles, data awareness, research patterns, and research focus. Finally, emerging research topics in the field of information science in the era of big data are also proposed. Key words: big data; data science; data engineering; infor
