Discuss in pairs or groups In?psychology,?sociology,?anthropology?and?philosophy,?identity?is the conception, qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person (self-identity) or group (such as national identity?and?cultural identity) different from others. ?? What is “identity”? ? A?psychological identity?relates to?self-image?(ones?mental model?of oneself),?self-esteem, and?individuality.? It is the key to figure out “where are you going”? It is the foundation for the individual to reach the world. Why should we start with “Identity”? 1. Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830?– May 15, 1886) was born into a Calvinist family of Amherst, Massachusetts, America. Emily attended Amherst Academy from 1840 to 1847 and also spent a year at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The school was strongly congregational, where she suffered serious religious crisis. 1. Emily Dickinson After 1862, affected by an unhappy love affair with Reverend Charles Wadsworth, she became a total recluse, living a secluded life. Hence, for her entire life, to send letters and poems to her friends was the only way to communicate with the outside world. Dickinson’s poetry writing began in the early 1850s. Altogether, she wrote nearly 1800 poems, of which only seven had appeared during her lifetime. After her death in 1886, her poems were discovered by her sister Lavinia. 1. Emily Dickinson Dickinson’s poems are usually based on her own experiences, her sorrows and joys. But within her little lyrics Dickinson addresses those issues that concern the whole human beings, which include religion, death, immortality, love, and nature. Dickinson’s poetry is unique and unconventional in its own way. Her poems have no titles, hence are always quoted by their first lines. Her poems are usually short, rarely more than twenty
