We may see during the 17 days, the API(Air Pollution Index) was always below 100. That means, Beijing’s air quality has been good or even excellent. And contrast to the same period in year 2007, we may see the air quality has been quite improved. * So we may understand how much car exhaust affects our atmosphere. When we look into the exhaust gas, hundreds of constituents can be found. Most of them are Nitrogen, Carbon Monoxide and Water. The pollutants only account for 1%. * But in this 1%, there are several pollutants that pollute our atmosphere, namely: Surplur Dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, PM, VOC and Carbon Monoxide. * We may get some detail information from the following chart. These data are about the air quality in American cities. We can see over 75% of Carbon Monoxide emission is from vehicles. And also, a great percentage of VOC, PM 2.5 and NOx are from car exhaust. So, we can say, vehicle emission has become the main reason of air pollution in big cities in developed countries. * Then, what about the situation in China? I’ll give you a brief introduction of it. * First, let’s see how much contribution China has done to the global automobile market. The chart below shows Chinese LV(Light Vehicle) Market Development. It has a sharply increase in both production and domestic sales. And from the forecast on the right side, the vehicle population in China will reach 150 million in year 2020. That’s of course a great number. * On the other hand, motor vehicles have become one of the main sources of air pollution in big cities in China, especially in East-Coast cities. Here shows some data from Peri-urban areas of Beijing. We can find them similar with the data from America. Nowadays, above 20% of air pollution in big cities in China is caused by car exhaust. And this number even reaches 40% in some regions. O
