When searching for the job you want, you can save considerable time and effort by understanding how employers approach the recruiting process. As shown in the slide above, the easiest way for you to find out about new opportunities (via employer’s outside advertising) is the employer’s least preferred way of finding new workers. According to some estimates, up to 80 percent of all job openings are never advertised, a phenomenon known as the hidden job market. Generally, employers prefer to look for candidates within their organizations. When hiring outside the company, they rely heavily on referrals from people they know and trust. Beyond personal referrals, employers use a wide variety of methods to identify potential employees. Employers also recruit candidates through employment agencies, state employment services, temporary staffing services, the employment bureaus operated by some trade associations, and headhunters. According to a recent survey of larger employers, corporate websites are the number-one source of external hires (receiving unsolicited résumés). Many send representatives to college campuses to interview students for job openings. Employers advertise job openings in traditional media (newspapers and trade journals), on their corporate websites, through search-engine advertising, and on job boards, such as Monster and CareerBuilder. To keep track of all the applicants in various stages of the recruiting process, many companies now use computerized applicant tracking systems to capture and store the résumés they receive each year. The employment process can consume many hours of your time over weeks or months, so organize your efforts in a logical, careful manner to save time and maximize your chances.
