Historical Background tempestuous period: English Bourgeois Revolution (1640-1648);Restoration; Glorious Revolution; Politically: Religiously: Religious reformation: it is Martin Luther, a German Protestant, who initiated the Reformation. Luther believed that every true Christian was his own priest and was entitled to interpret the Bible for himself. ?Henry VIII was regarded as the faithful son of the Catholic; his wife cut the ties with Rome Edward VI: the reform of the church’s doctrine and teaching was carried out Mary: there was a violent swing to Catholicism. ?Elizabeth’s reign: Protestantism has been firmly established . ?The religious reformation was actually a reflection of the class struggle waged by the new rising bourgeoisie against the feudal class and its ideology. Literature of the 17th century English literature of the revolution and restoration was very much concerned with the tremendous social upheavals of the time. Literature of the Revolution Period A. general characteristics 1) The Revolution Period was one of confusion in literature due to the breaking up of the old ideals. The Puritans believed in simplicity of life. They disapproved of the sonnets and the love poetry written in the previous period. Literature was as divided in spirit as were the struggling parties. 2) Literature in the Puritan Age expressed age and sadness. Even its brightest hours were followed by gloom and pessimism. 3) Romantic ardor can not be found in literature of the Puritan period. 4) John Milton, whose work would glorify any age and people, and in his work the indomitable revolutionary spirit found its noblest expression.
