A Story from the Big Tuna When I taught MBA students, something I did part time for over 20 years, I became aware that the quality of a student’s education was often hindered by a common mindset. Most students focused almost exclusively on the “destination.” They saw an MBA only in terms of a place you arrive at the end of a series of hurdles and their sole focus was on jumping each hurdle as a means of getting the prize at the end, an MBA. The problem this created was they often missed the learning opportunities along the way. If something didn’t advance them toward the three letters, MBA, in the most efficient manner, it was considered useless. And so challenging the instructor, pursuing points of personal interest, exploring aspects of a subject because with curiosity and engaging in high energy conversations about the material, often gave way to a search for the quickest way to get an acceptable grade and get on with the show. The students I admired recognized that they were spending a significant part of their life in school and they viewed their efforts as both a journey to be fully experienced and a destination to be reached. FISH! can be both a journey and a destination. Living a life rich with lightheartedness, service to others, present moment focus and conscious choice of attitudes, assures an adventure of a lifetime. And living that way in our work community makes it a place valued for its richness. We say we have a great culture, surely a worthwhile destination.
