江苏工业学院本科生毕业设计（论文） 1 Introduction The disparity between Chinese syntax and English syntax are mostly caused by the disparities of both languages. The differences of both languages will exert two kinds of effect on second language learning, that is, positive transfer and negative transfer. So what effects these two transfers produce on language learning, and how to solve them will be discussed in this thesis. Native language is the first and the most important language for our human beings. But in many cases, our native language always becomes a kind of barrier which hinders learners in the process of second language learning. Different languages have different syntaxes. In this paper, the author focuses on the differences between Chinese and English syntax through contrastive analysis, attempting to explain in what ways native languages can affect second language learners and offer some solutions. 2 Theoretical Background Dai Weidong (2002: 42) offers the definition of syntax in his A new Concise Course on Linguistics for Students of English, “Syntax is a branch of linguistics that studies how words are combined to from sentence and the rules that govern the formation of sentences. There are half a dozen major different syntactic theories.
